Dear Mr. Joost Lagendijk,
The Green Party of
Kosovo, together with the environmental civil society and independent
energy experts, are very frustrated in regards to the decision brought by
the Kosovo Government in building up new coal-fired power plants in the
country. The power plants are planned to engage in a capacity of more than
2000MW power generation that based in lignite and in the same location
where there are currently operating already existing power plants in a
capacity of 1500MW. Such a situation will cause a future environmental
collapse not only in the wider areas around the power plants, but will
also include the capital Prishtina. The decision does not take into
consideration the EU strategic environmental policy and standards for
Western Ballkan.
In Kosovo, more than 98%
of the generated electricity is currently realized through power plants.
There is negligence of electricity efficiency, and as a result, about 50%
of the total generated electricity is lost during the process. Density of
the population in the close areas around the power plants is more than740
inhabitants/km2. The building up of new power plants will displace
thousands of citizens from their lands. More than 10.000 Ha of
agricultural land will be degraded. Deficiency of drinking water in the
capital, Prishtina, will cause serious social problems. Higher levels of
carbon dioxide (CO2) emission in the atmosphere will rise several times in
relation with the referent year 1990.
Unfortunately, up until now, our voice has been completely ignored by
Kosovo's Government in regards to the power plants' issue. We hope that
our concerns will take place in your Resolution of the European Parliament
for Kosovo. We strongly believe that this is extremely important for the
future of Kosovo and trust that the time to act is now. Do not let a
"coal black hole" be created in Kosovo!
While thanking you sincerely for everything you
have done and are still doing for the wellbeing of Kosovo,
Behalf
of Green Party:
Daut Maloku,
Head of the Green Party of Kosovo
Prishtna,
